Project Intern

Background

Adequate physical activity is essential for lifelong health and well-being, and habits developed in adolescence track into adulthood. However, many young people today do not meet physical activity guidelines, and approaches to tackle youth physical inactivity have been lacking, potentially because most approaches have been implemented top-down with limited involvement of youth.

The YoPA project seeks to address this challenge through co-creation and systems thinking by involving youth in research and decision-making to co-create sustainable actions tailored to the local environment.

There is a broadened focus on understanding the full range of 24-hour movement behaviors (physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep) for improving health, and in the YoPA project we will investigate the impact of our accessible co-creation and systems approach to 24-hour movement behaviors in adolescents.

Study design

This is an observational longitudinal study, with data collection at three time points: baseline, after 3 months and after 6 months. During this internship you will be involved in the data collection at baseline and the second time point. At this moment, we have approximately 160 adolescents across multiple recruited secondary school classes.

24‐hour movement behaviors are assessed using a questionnaire and accelerometry.

What you will do

As an intern on this project, you will assist in collecting data on 24-hour movement behaviors in 12–17-year-old Dutch adolescents as part of the YoPA project. You will receive training to conduct the aforementioned data collection, which will take place in a secondary school in Amsterdam. Additionally, you will share responsibility for data entry, data cleaning, and analysis. From all data collected in this project, you will choose one research question of interest for your thesis.

Skills required

Important competences are planning and organizing, flexibility and creativity, speaking the Dutch language, affinity for working with adolescents, and an interest in hands-on research. The start date is February or March 2024, with preferably full-time availability.
